Hey friends!
It’s time to spill the tea on how I stumbled into the world of design. Trust me, it’s been a wild ride from pursuing a degree in Psychology to becoming a Canva whiz. So grab some hot tea, sit back, and let’s dive into the evolution of my love for design.
Early Design Chronicles
Now, let’s get one thing straight—I didn’t roll into college with dreams of becoming a designer. No ma’am! No sir! I was knee-deep in Psychology, which I loved since middle school, so… trust me! I was doing my thing “elsewhere” in life. But fate had other plans for me. Picture this: me, going from Psychology buff to Regional Business Analyst for a global university. Business, branding, and coaching didn’t start whispering sweet nothings in my ear for quite some time, yet… before I knew it, I was diving DEEP into the entrepreneurial rabbit hole.
Sure, I dilly-dallied and played with MySpace (coding as a teen!!!), Paint and Microsoft clip art (BOL!!!) as a kid, but making business image my thing? That was unexpected. After I was dissolved from my role as a business analyst in Atlanta, GA on the same day that I was going to buy my first house, I started branding my photography hobby as a business! That took me down a road of learning apps like Photoshop, Bridge, and Illustrator. Luckily, I had some friends and fellow designers and photographers show me the ropes. Suddenly, design wasn’t just a hobby; it was becoming a full-blown love affair. Job offers came knocking for more business analyst roles, but my life was being directed to support others in business whilst I created a foundation for myself.
My Rookie Days in Designville
Fast forward to my first gig. Pastor Vaughn, a long-time family friend, was launching GratefulChurch. He asked me several times to help him brand. I declined every time. lol Eventually—after his persistence, my prayers, and other knocks at my design door—I said yes to him (and a few others), and I learned more about branding and design than I ever imagined I would. My photography business and their design projects had me wrestling with heavyweight software and toiling for hoursssss—sometimes dayyyyyssss and weeks—on projects that could have been quick and easy, but the real world and speed of my business growth taught me that simplicity is where it’s at. Over time, Canva quickly became my bestie, and let me tell you, it’s is the superhero of user-friendly design tools!!! Time-saving and delivering results that could rival the so-called “pro” software? Count me in, honey!
Working solo on my company’s social media pages turned me into a social media marketing ninja. Several years deep into the entrepreneurial life, I felt the itch for a new challenge.
Life in the Fast Lane
Big leagues, big dreams, right? Well, not exactly. Business life showed me that not everyone gets the memo on the power of branding and design, especially ministries and social or community service providers who do not feel adequaately aligned with business enough to run a well-oiled organizational machine. I found that while I was designing BOMB websites and flyers, quirky blogs and marketing materials for clients, there posts were subpar and engagement was meh. My creative soul was thirsty. Big clients didn’t prioritize design, and ministries didn’t have the budgets we needed, and….well, I just wasn’t about that boring life. I needed the things I had learned in hands-on business, marketing, and branding to actually WORK! My stint managing my own business as a photographer made it clear—social media design was the missing link that could pull all our branding efforts together.
Cue the dramatic exit.
I found my calling.
My mission? Fixing the expensive, time-consuming, and draining design mess that is social media marketing for small business owners and ministry leaders.
